Turkish Spiny Mouse

Turkish Spiny Mouse (Acomys cilcicus)

'Acomys' comes from two Greek words, 'akoke' (a sharp point) and 'mus' (mouse). These mice are only found in one dry, rocky area on the coast of Turkey.

The backs of both males and females are covered with spine-like hairs.

Females give birth to 2-3 babies after a 5-6 week pregnancy. Unlike other mice, they are born with fur and open eyes. Lifespan is around 3 years in the wild. Spiny Mice usually feed at night. They eat seeds, grass and insects.
