Useful Plants
It is the intention of the Horticultural Section to show a range of plants throughout the Zoo that are of significant use to humans and animals. Examples of this can be seen in the Glorious Grasses garden, the Roman Garden and most recently the V.I.P. (Very Important Plant) border. The VIP border, opposite the Lion enclosure, was planted in Spring 2003 and represents plants that are of importance to man. Groups of plants have been chosen which are used for medicines, cosmetics/oils, drinks, fibres, flavouring/herbs and dyes.
A wildlife friendly garden is planned for the near future to show the relationship between plants and the creatures that depend on them. There will be suggestions for things people can do to encourage animals into their garden by creating wildlife-friendly habitats.
