Gardens
Chester Zoo isn't just an amazing collection of animals- it also has award winning gardens.
There are numerous garden areas in the zoo for you to explore. Our Andes Garden shows the terrrain and range of plants from the mountains of the Andes, Glorious Grasses along the Fountain Lawn and canal highlights the beauty, usefulness and diversity of the Grass family.
A spectacularly landscaped area, planted with lush tropical-looking vegetation has been created to complement the Komodo Dragon enclosure. The Wildlife Garden at Chester Zoo informs visitors about the important part their own backyards can play in providing a home for native wildlife.
Our Very Important Plant Border by the lion enclosure, at the start of the wooden bridge, highlights plants that are of importance to humans. The Rock Garden was built to commemorate the life of Elizabeth, the wife of Chester Zoo's founder George Mottershead and all of the plants are of Japanese and Chinese origin. The Roman Garden links to the City of Chester's historic past. Our version of the potting shed is the Grow Zone where you can go behind the scenes. The Sunken Garden is one of the hidden treasures of Chester Zoo, it features shade tolerant plants set around a spectacular water feature.
Our conservation of animals is dependent upon protection of their habitats too. Within many of the animal enclosures the environment is created to reflect the natural area in which the animals would live so our animals too can enjoy a beautiful and natural environment.
Come along to one of our Orchid Days on the 24th and 25th February 2010 to learn more about these beautiful plants, with daily activities and guest speakers.
Chester Zoo's Gardens are one of Cheshire's Gardens of Distinction.
