A Message from the Director General

Welcome!

If this is your first visit to the Chester Zoo web site , or if you have visited before , then we offer you a warm welcome.

You will see that much is happening in the Zoo . We are all looking forward to the new developments with great anticipation as they take shape during 2010 Chester Zoo is always changing and improving. Much of that change comes about thanks to the feedback we receive from you as well as through our constant efforts to achieve the very best for our animals and our visitors .

Conservation is the reason Chester Zoo exists and we currently care for some 7,000 animals representing more than 400 different species - about half of which are endangered. Every effort goes into ensuring the highest standards of welfare and the best care and attention is lavished upon all our animals, large and small.

Education is a key theme. At each enclosure there are unique ways of learning about the animals – by reading, touching and smelling the information panels. By simply observing we can all learn so much more about the animals, their natural habitats and what makes them so special and worth conserving .

Our charitable work extends well beyond the Zoo’s perimeter. At home and abroad , we support and conduct some 150 field projects for conservation and education Our activities overseas span more than 50 countries.

By visiting Chester Zoo a suporting us you can help make a real difference, not only to our animals, but to animals everywhere!

Thank you

Gordon McGregor Reid
