Pumpkin Smashing

3 November 2008

The zoos 10 Asian elephants had a smashing time marking the end of the pumpkin festival with a giant pumpkin mountain.

The Hollies Farm Shop, Tarporley, donated pumpkins to the elephants to give them a special treat.

Kevin Buley, Chester Zoo’s Head of Zoo Programmes, said: “The elephants had great fun with the pumpkin mountain, it was a nice surprise for them to walk out onto their island to find the pile of pumpkins waiting.

“Throughout the year, the elephants enjoy a very carefully balanced diet designed to keep them in the very best of health. Additional treats such as a pumpkin mountain provide an unusual diversion that help to stimulate interest and excitement in them.”

Mindy Cowap, of The Hollies Farm Shop, added: “We were delighted to donate our leftover pumpkins to help with the enrichment of the elephants at Chester Zoo.

“This year we harvested more than 4,000 pumpkins, which have been part of our special ‘holloween’ display – one of the largest in Cheshire. They brought some eerie excitement to our customers and we were glad they could do the same for these magnificent animals.”
