Research Registration at Chester Zoo

Over 200 research projects are carried out at Chester Zoo each year by professional scientists and students, including those studying for their undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications. In previous years we used to compile a Project Suggestion List to help supervisors consider appropriate zoo research options together with their students, but these lists would be very time-consuming to compile and would become out-of-date very quickly, and so we no longer produce them. Thus we encourage researchers to develop their own project ideas, while using the information they can gain here on the Zoo's website and in the Annual Reports, and to contact us for further advice when they have a clearer idea of what area they hope to study.

Details of how to apply to conduct a research project at the Zoo are given in the North of England Zoological Society (NEZS) Research Policy and its Appendices. In summary, all applicants must agree to be bound by the terms of our Research Policy and its Appendices. Applicants must submit a brief but clear research proposal, which includes information about the aims of the project, detailed methods, approximate duration of the research in the Zoo, and the planned output of the study (e.g. peer-reviewed publication, dissertation, etc) and payment for a Research Pass, which allows the researcher to access the Zoo and the Zoo Library during opening hours for the duration of the study. The current price of the Research Pass is £30 by cheque, payable to Chester Zoo.
