Leaf and stick insects

Stick and leaf insects are collectively known as Phasmids. They are well known for their incredible camouflage known as crypsis, which is the ability of an organism to blend with its environment. Phasmids not only have the same colour and body shape as the twigs and leaves they live on, they also sway and rock when they move to resemble vegetation moving in the breeze. As an additional form of protection, some species have brightly coloured wings which can be 'flashed' to scare away predators. Other species have a defensive chemical spray.
