Parrots

There are over 370 species of Parrots that are grouped into the ‘true’ parrots, cockatoos and the New Zealand parrots. They are distributed throughout the world’s tropics and in temperate regions of the Southern Hemisphere, with the greatest diversity found in South America and Australasia. Parrots are intelligent birds with vibrant plumage, which is usually predominantly green with varying amounts of other bright colours. Other characteristic features include a strong, curved bill, an upright stance, short legs and strong claws. Parrots find walking a little awkward and they sway clumsily from side to side as they go! Although no good for walking; their feet, toes and claws act more like hands, enabling them to grasp food items and making them fantastic climbers.

  • Hyacinth Macaws

Hyacinth Macaws are the largest and arguably the most spectacular members of the Parrot family, their deep rich cobalt blue plumage is augmented by the naked yellow eye ring and bare skin around the base of the lower mandible.
