Bears
Although there are only eight species of bear, they are widespread and live in a variety of habitats from cloud forests to sea ice. Bears are physically powerful, however they are largely shy, easily frightened and will avoid humans. Bears may come into conflict with humans and be persecuted for raiding crops or attacking livestock. The IUCN 'Red List of Threatened Species' classifies six of the eight bear species as threatened with extinction. Historically, bears have been hunted for their meat and fur. Further pressures on their populations are now caused by habitat loss, illegal trade and climate change.
