Elephants are the largest land animals currently living on our planet. They are highly intelligent and social creatures, who use a complex array of methods for communicating. Asian Elephants differ from their African relatives in numerous ways. They are slightly smaller in size, have much smaller ears and more of an arched back. Asian Elephants are also more agile and use their feet in conjunction with the trunk for manipulating objects!
Chester Zoo’s Elephants of the Asian Forest exhibit is home to our charismatic herd of Asiatic Elephants, which are part of a European Endangered Species Breeding Programme.
