Realm of the Red Ape

Realm of the Red Ape is an Indonesian forest themed exhibit which immerses visitors in the world of the forest canopy and its teeming biodiversity.

The exhibit houses our threatened Sumatran and Bornean Orangutans. We support the conservation of both these species in Sumatra and Borneo.

The zoo has a very successful history of breeding orangutans and this exhibit with its world class facilities for the apes has delivered continued success at Chester Zoo, with the birth of Tripa in October 2012 and Tuti in December 2012.

Also to be seen and heard are a group of Lar Gibbons which share the planted indoor and outdoor areas with the orangutans.

The orchid strewn roped walkway is also home to several Indonesian birds, such as the Scissor-billed Starling and Timor Sparrow.
