Conservation and the role of zoos
Using Chester Zoo as an example, the session will cover the following aspects of zoo conservation:
▪ an introduction to zoos and their changing role over time
▪ the modern zoo approach (including recreation, research, education and conservation)
▪ protection and monitoring of threatened populations (e.g. IUCN, CITES)
▪ examples of Chester Zoo's conservation work, both in the Zoo and the wild, including a look at breeding programmes, collaborative projects and reintroductions.
