Bats often cause confusion when it comes to their classification.  Take the opportunity to observe live bats in Chester Zoo’s Fruit Bat Forest, a themed immersive exhibit, to decide once and for all are bats birds or mammals?

Things to do in school beforehand:
Print out this sheet of instructions to bring with you and use on the day.  The map at the end will be useful.  Introduce the characteristics of the 5 vertebrate groups to your class. 

There is a taught KS1 Classification session available at the zoo.  Booking for this session is essential.  If you attend one of these sessions no prior subject introduction is required.

Resources required in the Zoo:

Pen and paper to make a note of your pupils’ observations.
