Penguins have torpedo-shaped bodies and their wings have become flippers, so when they swim, they look as if they are flying underwater! You'll get great views of this at the underwater viewing windows at Penguin Island.
They can't breathe underwater, but they're able to hold their breath for long periods and spend as much as 75% of their time in the water.
Our penguins are currently off-show while we improve their habitat. We are providing new viewing windows and filtration systems so you can enjoy watching our Humboldt penguins racing through the water.
We are sorry that this area of the zoo is closed to enable this transformation to happen and thank you so much for your understanding.
We promise it will be worth it!
