Pigeons & Doves

We have over ten species of pigeons and doves in the zoo, including the largest species, the Victoria crowned pigeon and one of rarest species; the Socorro dove, which is extinct in the wild.

Some species are relatively dull in colouration whilst others have brightly coloured, metallic-looking plumage and elaborate decorative crests.

There are around 300 species of pigeons and doves and although they do look quite different you can usually identify them by their large rounded bodies, stocky necks and small heads.
