Protecting the Environment

We’re devoted to conservation. Our work is all about protecting biodiversity and helping save species from extinction. So looking after the environment is essential for us.
We’re doing all we can to reduce our carbon emissions, and we try to get everyone around us to work as sustainably as possible.
Here’s our official Environmental Policy.
International Recognition
We’re the first UK zoo, and only the second one in Europe, to be awarded ISO14001. This is an independent, internationally recognised standard. It’s given to organisations that show a real commitment to looking after the environment.
You only get it by proving you understand, and act on, big issues like using raw materials, energy, emissions, waste and transport. You have to meet all the environmental legal standards.
And once you’ve got it, you can only keep it if you keep improving your environmental policy. So the fact we’ve got ours shows how dedicated we are.
Responsible buying
We also look at the environmental and economic cost of the things we buy, as well as just the pounds and pence.
The idea is that we – and hopefully all organisations – move away from just buying and disposing of stuff, and towards re-using and recycling things to minimise waste.
