I remember being taken by my parents to the zoo and having a ride on an elephant. It was very exciting to an 8 year old getting close up to such a large animal. I think there were other children on the elephant at the same time but I can't quite remember how many. Obviously health and safety were not very important then. It was marvellous seeing all the other exotic animals. I also remember the slot machines in the big house and spending lots of pennies and half-pennies playing them. I can't remember if the Zoo had been closed during the war but it was a great day out and I have continued to be a regular visitor over the years with my children, grandchildren and now my great grandchildren.
