School trip

By Brenda Vaughan

I was a pupil at Freehold School, Oldham and we were taken to Chester Zoo on a school trip. It was really exciting. I can remember seeing people having elephant rides but my lasting memory is of a boy throwing the cap of the headmaster's son into the lion pit! The boy who lost his cap wasn't a pupil at the school but I remember that it was navy blue with light blue hoops around it. I was worried that the lions might eat it and it would make them poorly!! I was only 7 or 8 at the time.
