my earliest memory of many visits to the zoo with my family was the long bus ride to get there - no car then and very exciting, all the way from stockton heath! then the elephants, always the elephants, very dignified and huge... but also the polar bears, which even at my young age i felt sorry for, so far from the arctic seas. but what impressed me most were the formal flower beds - masses and masses of brilliant colours. after all, this was a zoo in a garden, i thought!
