I used to come to the zoo quite a lot as a child, as my dad was good friends with George Mottershead. They met at Belle Vue zoo, which is where my parents used to work, and had a shared interest in birds as my dad was a bird keeper. George used to visit my dads shop often – dealing with real and exotic birds, based in Chester. It was a Sunday treat to go to the zoo, and sometimes we even went into some of the animal enclosures – health and safety wasn't known then. Christmas and birthday presents were always animal related, and I even remember my dad bringing home hummingbirds once and I had them flying round me in the bathroom whilst I had a bath. So I've always had a great interest in birds – I don't think I had much choice!
