1960

My mother holding a young orangutan

By Steve Williams

The picture of my mother Rosemary Williams (nee Hill) was taken in 1960. She is the daughter of Len Hill, founder of Birdland, Bourton-on-the-Water. The photo was taken on one of their many visits to Chester Zoo – George Mottershead was a friend of the family. Mr Mottershead also visited the family at Birdland.

I'll let Mum take over: “My Father was very much like 'Motty' as we affectionately referred to him, having the same determination and single-mindedness to open his zoo. When he started excavating the site the locals organised a petition thinking it was going to be a swimming pool! So my father asked for a copy to sign so that he could find out who the signatories were. Len as also the first in the U.K. to have birds at liberty and often I would have to go round the village retrieving macaws etc. including climbing trees.

We thoroughly enjoyed the series and thought the cast was brilliant."
