Where not to eat your picnic

By Alice Thomas

Growing up in Wrexham in a family with four sisters, we would regularly visit Chester Zoo with Mum and Dad. It became an annual treat for my youngest sisters birthday which is in July. In the 1960's there weren't the catering facilities the zoo offers today, or the wonderful picnic areas. So armed with our tomato sandwiches and hard boiled eggs we would search for some seats to enjoy our picnic on. As the British weather inevitably turned to rain we would plonk ourselves down on the benches in the Elephant house and tuck in. The look on other visitors faces was hilarious as they passed by, wondering why anyone would chose to eat in such a 'smelly' environment! We didn't care though, eating our lovely picnic at the zoo, whilst watching elephants was a big adventure in those days.
