During my time at the zoo I was interested in setting up an invertebrate house. I had my own collection of creepy crawlies in the chimp house kitchen. George Mottershead had apparently been keen on the idea of showing spiders and such-like for a long time, and one day he saw a Giant Atlas moth that I had in a net cage and he asked me to make a list of things that I'd need in order to start a proper collection. I was taken up to his flat in the Oakfield and nervously presented my list. "This only comes to twenty quid," he said, "Buy them!" A small area at the top of the tropical house ramp was converted and I had my "Insect House".
