Jubilee - the baby

By Gareth Richard

We had just moved to Chester and decided to go to the zoo. We went to see the elephants, and it turned out to be one of the first days that Jubilee met the public.
He had difficulties managing his back legs, but his mother and another 'aunt' stood either side of him, gently picking his hindquarters up with their trunks.
Another problem he had was tripping over his very pink trunk, but of course his female guardians were checking that he was all right.
Out front was the proud father, a devoted keeper. He was so chuffed and spent a lot of time explaining elephant behaviour. We spent quite a time watching with delight this wonderful exhibition of gentle elephant behaviour, and, although we returned many times over the next 30 years, this day will always stick in our memory.
