Penguins & Giraffes

By Natalie Poole

We used to live in Accrington, Lancashire. Our mum and Dad brought us to the zoo when I was 3 and my sister was 4 years old. At the time the wall enclosing the penguin enclosure was very low and I wanted to play with the penguins. My Dad caught me just as I was climbing over the wall and almost in with the penguins to play with them. Needless to say I was not happy. Later my sister wanted to ride on a giraffe and when she was told it wasn't possible. Whilst our parents had intended a lovely day at the zoo we were both very unhappy and crying because I couldn't play with the penguins and my sister couldn't ride on a giraffe. The penguins have remained a firm favourite of mine and I fed them in 2012 as a 40th birthday treat from my parents. My sister also managed to feed the giraffes in 2012, again as a birthday treat from myself and my family so we each got a little taste of our wish afterall - even if it was nearly 40 years afterwards. I now live in Ellesmere Port and visit the penguins almost every week as a Member. Thank you Chester Zoo
