By Chester Zoo
As you wander through our stunning Rock Garden you may find it hard to believe that this area was originally constructed in the early 1970s in memory of Elizabeth Mottershead (1887 – 1969), wife of Chester Zoo founder, George Mottershead.
The garden is still overlooked by Oakfield House; a magnificent building in the heart of the zoo grounds, which was George and Elizabeth’s family home and where Chester Zoo began!
Three decades later the Rock Garden was given a revamp and became what is now, a peaceful space, a place where you can reflect and think about just how far Chester Zoo has come. We’re sure Elizabeth would be delighted with how the area has established over the years.
