Recycled building materials

By Lynne Collins

Due to lack of funds and a war mentality everything was reused and bought cheaply. Some of the enclosures were made from the safety wire from the building of the Humber Bridge. I went to Hull University when the bridge was being finished and dad and I stopped there each time to see how they were getting on.

Dad (Charlie Collins) noticed the safety wire, thought it would be a great thing to use, mentioned the wire to Fred Williams (June's husband) who got in touch with them, I think. And low and behold Chester Zoo used the wire when it had been finished with from the building of the Humber Bridge.

I'm not sure which enclosures, and if they're still there, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's not still in use somewhere.
