In May 2012 Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh visited the zoo as part of the Diamond Jubilee tour and officially open the new main entrance area, the Diamond Jubilee Quarter. The zoo has had many royal visits before but never the Queen, and to celebrate we invited thousands of people from local schools and community groups to line the route she took on the monorail. We invited a local school to sing to the Queen, various zoo staff got to meet the royal couple or be involved in the programme in some way and we even brought over team members from our conservation partners in India and Tanzania to come over to talk about the work they do in the field.
