Elephant house opens

By Chester Zoo

After the war George began the construction of a new Elephant House, which was made up of recycled materials including antitank blocks, pill boxes and concrete slabs which were collected within a ten-mile radius of the zoo. A garage, which had been the original accommodation for the elephants later became a maintenance yard.

Nomad - a well known radio personality from the BBC's Children's Hour - officially opened the new house by entering through the doors of the new building on the back of Molly's back. This event drew in a crowd of over 4,000 people!

This was a major milestone for the zoo, as Nomad said: "The opening of a new elephant house is an important event in the history of any zoo. It happens, perhaps, only once in a lifetime..."
