Another UK first

By Chester Zoo

During this year the zoo saw eight extremely rare Tuataras brought over from their New Zealand home accompanied by a Maori Chief. At the time the zoo was one of only 5 zoos outside New Zealand to keep Tuataras. We also welcomed two rare Asiatic lions, Jake and Chandani to our collection who were a very successful pairing. Their first cubs were three beautiful cubs - Jade, Sabu and Rajah.

On top of that we also had a rare Tawny Frogmouth chick hatch at the zoo - which was very exciting as it was a UK first! This species of bird is extremely rare and Chester Zoo had two lonely male birds in the collection. Dr Roger Wilkinson, zoo curator, contacted a zoo in Australia who sent two females over, and not long after their arrival both pairs produced eggs.
