Parrot Breeding Centre

parrot breeding centre - small - 1

The Parrot Breeding Centre at Chester Zoo has been designed with parrot welfare and conservation as a high priority.

The plan of our Parrot Breeding Centre shows that much of the building is behind the scenes. We hope that this layout will give our parrots the privacy they need to behave naturally and reproduce.

We have given them the opportunity to select their own mates. We place ourĀ Philippine Cockatoo males in separate enclosures and give the female access to each of them through mesh. She can then choose which male she wants to perch beside and we can then pair them up.

We hope that by giving these highly intelligent birds a choice we will successfully breed these endangered parrots at Chester Zoo.
