Grow Zone

1502orchids02

The Grow Zone consists of two of the nursery greenhouses in which we display some of our important plant collections and plants that you will see in the tropical animal houses around the zoo.

There is a permanent display of flowering orchids which are selected from our collection of over 2,000 plants. This includes specimens from our national collection of Pleurothallidinae orchids.

In the same house you will find our cacti collection which currently numbers over 1500 plants.

The zoo holds three national collections of Cacti; Copiapoa, Matucana and Turbinicarpus. (To find out more about National Plant Collections visit the Plant Heritage website).

In the second of the Grow Zone greenhouses can be found our carnivorous plant collection and a selection of epiphytic plants, notably Bromeliads.

There are also a wide range of tropical plants including ferns, begonias, ficus and examples of economic plants including coffee, tea, sugar, citrus, cocoa, pineapple, etc.
