Segway tours

How do I buy a Segway tour?
Click here to buy your Segway tour or call 01244 650 281. You will be asked to select a date for your tour from a list of available dates.

What happens after purchase?
After your purchase is complete you will receive an email confirming your purchase and everything you need to know about your Segway tour – listing when & where it will take place!

I am a member. Do I get a discount?
As this is a separate activity that takes place outside normal zoo opening hours there is no discount available

Do I have to pre-book a date for my Segway tour?
You will be asked at the point of purchase to select one of our available dates for your tour

What's included in the price?
The Segway tour includes a safety briefing with an expert and a chance to operate and familiarise yourself with the equipment before entering the zoo.  The tour includes provision of a safety helmet and use of the equipment throughout the tour.  The participant will be allowed access in the zoo after the activity has taken place.

After successfully completing an induction you will have the chance to enter the zoo before it opens to the public for a guided Segway tour with one of our the zoo's tour guides.  You’ll see the zoo from a different perspective and learn about some of our amazing species. After completion of your tour you will be allowed entry back into the zoo for the remainder of the day.

Is there an age restriction?
This Segway tour is suitable for children aged 14 years and over.

Are there any other restrictions?
Regrettably, certain guests will be unable to take part including people who have difficulty with their balance, individuals with vertigo, pregnant women and people outside the weight restriction of 45KG (7.1 stones) and 120KG (19 stones)

Whilst every effort will be made to accommodate those with a disability or learning difficulty, due to practicality and health and safety this cannot always be achieved, please contact Chester Zoo for advice before purchasing.

This tour may not be suitable for participants requiring a carer.  Following individual assessment if a carer is required they can join the tour for free in a walking capacity.  Should a carer wish to ride the Segway they may do so at an additional participant charge.

Will I need safety equipment?
This Segway tour is conducted at walking speed and does not include an off road speed experience.  As recommended by the manufacturer a safety helmet will be provided and must be worn at all times.

How long does the Segway tour last?
The Segway tour/experience will last approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes inclusive of the safety induction.

How many people will be joining me on the tour?
There will be up to 9 other participants taking part. This event is also suitable for a group booking of up to 10 participants.

How often will the Segway tour take place?
There will be a couple of Segway tours offered per week and these dates can be found on our booking page

Do I get to see any animals?
Here at Chester Zoo we respect all of our animals and allow them to choose if they wish to occupy the external or internal areas of their enclosures.  As the Segways are not authorised for use within the animal houses it does mean the variety of animals you will see on the tour may vary from day to day.

Is the welfare of the animals compromised?
Care is taken at Chester Zoo to develop and organise experiences that do not compromise the welfare of the animals.  For this reason a pre-planned dedicated route will be used for the Segway tour.

What if I become scared and can’t use the Segway?
No one is made to do anything that they do not want to do. If you wish to leave the induction and not continue with the tour you are welcome to do so. The induction course is delivered to a specified standard and most people find that within a very short space of time they are able to control the Segway with ease.

Will there be someone qualified with me?
Yes, there will be an experienced Segway provider and zoo tour Guide with you at all times to supervise the activity.

Is it dangerous?
It should be recognised by participants that any activity involving moving equipment has a hazardous element.  To help minimise potential risks the Segways used at Chester Zoo have their speed limit restricted to 3 miles per hour and a safety helmet is provided.  Furthermore all participants undergo an induction and familiarisation of the equipment on a grassed area before their competency is assessed and they are allowed access into the zoo.

Experienced operators will remain with participants throughout the course to ensure constant observation and will cease the tour for any participant not adhering to operating procedures.

It is a condition of participation in the tour that the risks and restrictions have been understood and agreed to. All participants will be required to wear the safety helmet throughout.

What happens if the weather is bad?
Segway tours are programmed to take place during the warmer months of the year and will still be delivered in light rain.  In cases of severe weather conditions (wind/lightning) the experience may be cancelled and rescheduled for another day.

Will this tour available all year round?
No this encounter will only take place from mid June to mid October.

Can I bring a guest?
This tour takes place in the main zoo outside normal zoo opening hours and is NOT suitable for spectators. Participants will however be granted access to the zoo after the tour to join their guests

Will I be able to take photographs?
Use of mobiles will be prohibited whilst raiding Segways but there will be photographic opportunities at stop points.

Can I get a refund on my tour?
Please do not book this encounter unless you are sure you able to take part. A refund will not be given for general cancellations.  This is because spaces on encounters are limited and as a conservation charity it’s important that we optimise our income generating opportunities to help with vital conservation works. The booking cannot be re-arranged, extended or exchanged for vouchers.

Any other questions?
If you have a question which is not covered in this list, please email gifts.experiences@chesterzoo.org and we will respond as soon as we can.

Please call 01244 650281 if you have any urgent queries about the Segway tour.
