Frequently asked questions

Volunteering

Here are the answers to the most frequently asked questions about being a volunteer at Chester Zoo.

Q: How old do I have to be to volunteer?
A: The minimum age for all of our volunteer roles is 18.

Q: Do I need qualifications to become a volunteer?
A: No, but the more relevant experience and qualifications and, perhaps most importantly, enthusiasm you have the better.

Q: If I volunteer will this lead to a job at the zoo?
A: The experience gained through volunteering will help when it comes to applying for jobs and for interviews. But you would still have to apply and compete for any job; there is no guarantee of employment.

Q: How long do I need to volunteer for?
A:
• For Fundraising Volunteers, we ask for a minimum commitment of one session every six months. Each fundraising session usually involves 2-3 hours of volunteering.
• For Visitor Engagement Volunteers we would like you to volunteer for a minimum of 6 months.
• The Learning Volunteer Roles are for 4 months.

Q: Do you pay travel expenses?

A: Unfortunately we do not pay travel expenses.

Q: Do you have anywhere for me to stay when I volunteer?
A: Unfortunately we cannot provide accommodation or expenses for accommodation.

Q: I work shifts. Can I volunteer on different days each week?
A: This depends on the volunteer role. Visitor Engagement Volunteers use our online sign up system which is very flexible so you are not bound to the same day each week. Fundraising volunteer opportunities are available on an ad hoc basis and vary each month. Learning Volunteers need to commit to a specific day each week.
