Our work with Sumatran orangutans

As you may have seen in the latest episode of The Secret Life of the Zoo, our seven Sumatran orangutans have recently moved into their new home on Islands.

You can see them exploring their new enclosure here.

Our latest Sumatran orangutan arrival was named Siska, after Indonesian vet Siska Sulistyo who spent three months working at Chester Zoo last year. She was the first one to spot the baby orangutan with her mum.

Despite the fact that orangutans are our closest relatives – we share over 96% DNA with them – we’re destroying their homes. We’re working on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra, together with our project partners, to protect the forests and the many species that exist within them.
