Turtles & Tortoises

Although they're both reptiles with shells there are lots of differences between turtles and tortoises.

Turtles are aquatic and mostly live in, or near, freshwater or the sea. They're perfectly adapted to spending large amounts of time underwater and have either webbed feet or flippers. The only time they come on land is to lay their eggs - before quickly returning to the water.

Tortoises, on the other hand, are entirely terrestrial - which means they live on land only. They have strong claws that help them dig burrows and walk over rocky, uneven ground. Tortoises are mostly herbivorous, eating plants that have a lot of moisture, whereas turtles are more omnivorous, eating plants, insects, and other small animals.
