New arrival makes debut

Antelope classed as ‘Extinct in the Wild’ born at Chester Zoo

A three day old Scimitar-horned Oryx is looked over by zoo keepers at Chester Zoo.

The antelope,  a male, was micro-chipped and fitted with an ear tag.

This is the second baby this year for the group at Chester Zoo.  A typical gestation period is approximately eight months and the horns can grow up to 150cm in length.

Scimitar-horned Oryx, which is classed as Extinct in The Wild, was originally found in Saharan fringe, Tunisia, Morocco and Senegal.
