Foot and Mouth disease threatened the zoo which closed for eleven weeks. Visitors flooded back after a huge press campaign supporting the Zoo. We had our busiest Easter Monday ever in 1968 when 40,000 visitors came to the zoo. The zoo had been forbidden territory until clearance was given by the Ministry of Health. Fortunately George Mottershead had the strength will-power to overcome this setback.
