An appeal for a new penguin pool was launched, and a model of the proposed pool was placed in one of the windows of the souvenir shop. Donations flooded in and the construction began! The new pool had underwater viewing and was surrounded by new gardens which soon proved to a great attraction. Whipsnade zoo donated 12 Humboldt penguins and a further 12 black-footed penguins came from Amsterdam zoo. And it wasn’t long before the occupants began to breed. The pool was opened by astronomer Sir Patrick Moore, who has composed a piece of music titled ‘Playful Penguins’ especially for the occasion – which he performed on the xylophone, accompanied by a choir of children from Upton High School.Photo credit: Kenneth Green
