During the war years...

By Jean Howell

I am 80 years old now but I have vivid memories of when I was a little girl going with my Dad to deliver coal to a place at Gatesheath, Nr Tattenhall, Nr Chester. It was during the war years. It belonged to George Mottershead and it was such a thrill for me because they had little monkeys in cages in the back yard and I would watch them being fed. Dad told me it belonged to Chester Zoo. It was his favourite place to deliver to because they always gave him a cup of tea and a piece of cake! I cannot find any details of them living there but I know that the monkeys were part of the zoo. Sadly I never got to visit the zoo until I was grown up.
