George Mottershead helping with the early days Newquay Zoo

By Mark Norris

In the archives of Newquay Zoo are letters from George Mottershead to one of his old Chester Zoo staff, the late Peter Lowe. Peter left Chester Zoo to become the Curator of Newquay Zoo as it was being set up in 1968/9. The letters over several years covered a wide range of topics about designing enclosures, obtaining suitable animals and a few health problems.

So George Mottershead who started Chester Zoo "without bars" carried on empowering and inspiring people to create new zoos in 1969 like Newquay Zoo for people to enjoy, learn about and conserve animals.

Thanks George from all of us at Newquay Zoo!
Mark Norris, Newquay Zoo
