The renaming of the Tapir

By Gary Edwards

My first trip to Chester Zoo was in 1973, aged just under three years old. Only thing I can rember is seeing the black and white tapirs that were then in the elephant house. I don't know why but they wernt in their pen surrounded by a moat but insted in a pen that you would see sheep in. I was in mums arms, dad was talking to a keeper, just then one of the tapirs did a wee. I of course saw it and shouted wee wee at top of voice. Hence forth tapiers were called Wee Wee's by the family.
