Working at Chester Zoo

By Charles Leach

One of my claims to fame is the fact that I was the first Educational Assistant at Chester Zoo. I was appointed in 1976 and later "opened shop" in a Portakabin at Green End the following year.

During the first year of operation I gave talks in buses and coaches to school parties on arrival or sometimes in the Ape House.

We published an educational booklet, two types of questionnaire and numerous leaflets about popular species in the collection. All this work was done in house on a Roneo 870 duplicator with stencils.

The photograph (attached) was taken in the Portakabin at the zoo in 1977.
