My Winning Elephant!

By Beverley Jones

In July 1996 my daughter Mandy (then aged 6 years) was a runner up in a competition with The Times newspaper. She took a photograph of Sheba one of the adult elephants, and the judge said "it could have been taken anywhere but a zoo" because there were no bars! Her prize was to meet a photographer from The Times who took pictures of Mandy with Karha the baby elephant and one of the giraffes. She also won a camera and a years adoption of an elephant at London Zoo. Once this expired we adopted an elephant for Mandy at Chester Zoo for a big part of her childhood. We spent many happy days at the zoo visiting 'her elephant'!

Chester zoo will always have a special place in the hearts of all our family and we feel so privileged to have the originals of those wonderful pictures taken by The Times photographer... which we will treasure always. (Unfortunately, due to them not having been taken by us we cannot submit them (as per T&C)
