Fighting the opposition

By Chester Zoo

Not everyone was on board with George's plans of opening the zoo. As soon as George reported that he proposed to use his property for the purposes of a zoological garden and aviary opposition was aroused at once and a petition was presented from approximately 700 residents of the parish who objected to it.

George was determined to open the zoo. He explained that the grounds would contain an aviary for foreign and British birds and that it would be largely used for educational purposes. Newspapers reports about the zoo were positive.

After a visit from the Ministry of Health, George received a letter to inform him that he could go ahead with his plans to open a zoological garden and aviary.
