Giraffe born at Chester Zoo

By Tim Rowlands

Margaret arrived two weeks prematurely and was struggling to feed from her mother Fey. At only 5ft tall, Margaret was one of the smallest giraffes we've ever seen.

I was quickly able to form a bond with Margaret and eventually I began to bottle feed her and she went from strength to strength. The odds were always slightly stacked against Margaret given her size but thanks to round-the-clock dedicated care from the keeping staff she pulled through.

Margaret was named after my mum, and was the first female Rothschild giraffe to be born at Chester Zoo. After 25 years of working with giraffes, Margaret was the last giraffe I had to hand rear.
