The event – taking place simultaneously throughout Europe – will see our closest relations in the animal kingdom take centre stage.
The week is in support of the EAZA Ape Campaign – coordinated by the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria – and aims to raise awareness of, and funds for, the conservation of the likes of gibbons, orangutans, chimpanzees and bonobos. Almost all ape species are either Endangered or Critically Endangered, according to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
Chester Zoo has pledged to raise at least €9,999 for the cause, which also aims to make a significant and lasting difference to the continued survival of apes.
Throughout Ape Week at Chester Zoo there will be a special opportunity to meet the Primate Keepers and learn all about the likes of gibbons, orangutans, chimpanzees and bonobos (everyday 11:00 – 11:45) and visitors will also have the chance to ‘Ape Around’ – with touch tables, face painting, information boards, stalls and games (14:30 – 16:00).
