Meerkats on the lookout (for elves?!) at Chester Zoo | Coronation Street star Ian Puleston-Davies and family with an elf

But our recruitment chiefs are deadly serious and will pay £7.26 an hour to the right candidates who “will work closely with Santa, Mrs Claus and fellow merry makers.”

The job advert says “the ideal applicants will own their own pointy shoes and hat” however it states that the “ability to make reindeers fly is not essential.”

Catherine Briely, Chester Zoo’s events manager, said:

“This is the first time we have advertised for elves and we’ll be looking for jolly individuals who have an excellent knack for sprinkling some Christmas magic.

“They’re certainly not ordinary roles but they’re serious, specialist positions and we’re prepared to search far and wide to find the right people.

“It’s a unique opportunity and we’re looking for a special group of people to bring Christmas to life. Possessing pointy ears is certainly not essential but, you never know, it could be advantageous!”

The jobs have come up ahead of the zoo’s winter exposition – Lantern Magic.

Catherine added: “The zoo is a wonderful place to be around Christmas and at night time you really do get to see the place in a whole new light. Our elves will have to cope with the sounds of the lions roaring and the elephants trumpeting but hopefully, that’s a very appealing part of the job.”
