Enter a tropical habitat and come face to face with this HUGE venomous lizard…

Did you know that Komodo dragons can eat 80% of their own body weight in just 30 minutes?! This incredible carnivore eats only once a month…and they eat EVERYTHING! This behind-the-scenes experience at the Dragons in Danger habitat will be one you’ll never forget.

You’ll help our keepers to create scent trails and other forms of enrichment like hiding or scattering food – it’s not everyday you can say you helped feed one of the world’s largest lizards! PLUS you’ll also help the keepers feed some of the other animals that can be found in this habitat too.

Learning all about our conservation projects overseas that helps prevent their extinction. You’ll have the unique opportunity to ask our animal experts anything you want to know about this impressive carnivore.

Your experience

Will last about 60 minutes. Approximately 30 minutes spent with the animals.

Lay scent trails and other forms of enrichment like hiding or scattering food. Then watch the komodo dragon and discuss its behaviour. Our keepers may also need help with weighing or target training.

Get up close and help our keepers feed the tortoises or lizards.

Take the opportunity to learn about these incredible animals and ask our keepers any questions you  have.

Terms and conditions

Experience includes admission for the participant only.

The experience is available for adults and children aged 12 years old and over. As this experience takes place behind the scenes it is not suitable for spectators to come along and watch you take part. However, those aged between 12-15 must be accompanied by a spectating adult.

Regrettably certain guests will be unable to take part including people with relevant phobias or known allergies; and immunocompromised individuals.

Whilst every effort is made to accommodate those with a disability or learning difficulty, due to practicality and health and safety this cannot always be achieved – contact Chester Zoo before purchasing.

The Komodo dragon habitat is really warm, so please bring a bottle of water with you, which can be filled up at Adventure HQ before your experience starts.

COVID safety requirements

Face masks are mandatory for all participants even those who are medically exempt. All participants MUST wear a dark coloured face mask.

All guests’ hands must be washed/sanitised prior to starting and after an experience.

All guests within proximity to our animals must also wear protective gloves which shall be provided.

Social distancing must always be adhered to by guests when in proximity of staff and other guests.

Limited capacities have been introduced to all experiences to ensure social distancing can be maintained for the safety of our animals, visitors and staff.

Unfortunately the keepers will be unable to take photographs for you during the experience with your own devices, but when the keepers say it is safe to do so you are more than welcome to take some yourself.
