We’re facing a crisis. Beautiful, remarkable and rare birds are being captured and taken from their forest homes to be sold on markets as part of the illegal wildlife trade.

We won’t stand back and let these birds disappear forever but we desperately need your help.

Through this project, your learners will investigate the negative effect the pet trade is having on songbirds in Indonesia. The students will learn bird classification and how to identify native songbirds. Through educational games and activities we will empower them to take action to help our native birds and tell others about the songbird crisis.

Our experts will support you every step of the way, delivering a teacher kickstarter session, workshops for each participating class in school and in the zoo and providing all the resources you need to take learning across the curriculum.

WORKSHOP 1 (In school)

The first workshop will expand the students’ vocabulary by teaching them important terminology such as passerine, endangered and native. By the end of the session they will be able to identify some native birds by sight and by sound and identify some of the songbird species that live in Bali in Indonesia.

WORKSHOP 2 (In school)

The next workshop will focus on Indonesian songbirds. Your students will learn about the pet trade and the devastation it is causing. We’ll explore the IUCN red list and conservation status of the birds and discuss how bird populations are monitored and allow them to try it for themselves by taking part in a bird watch in the school grounds.

WORKSHOP 3 (In school)

The last workshop is about empowering the children and showing them how they can help. It will teach them how to help birds both across the world in Indonesia and right back home here in the UK. They will take part in creative activities to make things for the birds, such as bird feeders, that they can take home.

ZOO VISIT

During your school trip to the zoo you will meet with one of our team for a short session with an activity and tour around our animal habitats to see the birds that are native to Indonesia and recap some of things we learnt.

The delivery offer includes:

  • A virtual Kickstarter meeting to introduce the school staff to the project, additional FREE learning resources that we have on offer, and ideas for how the teachers can make this a cross-curricular project for all year groups.
  • 3 Conservation Educator led interactive workshops in the school setting for each class
  • Free entrance for participating classes to Chester Zoo including teaching and activities led by the education team.

This project offer is aimed at KS2 but can be adapted to a slightly higher or lower Key Stage on request.

GO VIRTUAL

A fully virtual version of this project can also be delivered. A virtual project still includes all of the resources and ongoing support, as well as sessions one to three, all delivered virtually via video link. It can be a great way to connect with us if you are outside of our catchment area.
